The spokeswoman for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tessa van Staden, confirmed her country’s refusal to normalize relations with the Syrian regime, before making “sufficient progress” in the political process based on Security Council Resolution 2254.
The Dutch official indicated that “only a comprehensive and political solution can end the conflict in Syria permanently,” according to “Syria TV.”
She pointed out that punishing countries for normalizing relations with the Syrian regime or supporting it economically is not out of the question, explaining that the European Union’s sanctions against Syria target the Assad regime, as well as companies and businessmen who benefit from their relations with the regime and the war economy.
The Dutch official refused to disclose the details of the meetings with the Syrian regime, as part of her endeavor to hold it accountable for human rights crimes, but affirmed her country’s commitment to ending the crimes that continue to occur every day, achieving justice for the victims and holding the perpetrators accountable in Syria.
