European Union spokesman Peter Stano confirmed that the bloc will not normalize relations with the Syrian regime, nor will it lift sanctions, before achieving progress in the political process in accordance with International Resolution 2254.
Stano said that the European Union’s foreign and security policy official, Josep Borrell, is in contact with “Arab partners” to understand expectations about the Arab approach to Damascus, after it is returned to the Arab League.
In turn, the German envoy to Syria, Stefan Schneck, stressed the need for normalization with Damascus not to be free, pointing to the firmness of Berlin’s position rejecting any normalization with Damascus, before progress in a political solution.
Shneck called for pressure on Assad for the sake of the political process, in accordance with International Resolution 2254, noting that Damascus did not take any step in the political solution.
For her part, the French envoy to Syria, Brigitte Cormi, expressed her belief that normalization without compensation will not produce results, and affirmed the steadfastness of the French position in this regard, calling on Damascus to take action regarding the detainees and missing persons.
