The US State Department issued a statement stating that the return of refugees to Syria must be safe and voluntary.

The statement noted the willingness to initiate an Arab leadership role in efforts to resolve the crisis and the need to address the repercussions of the crisis on neighboring countries, particularly terrorism and drug trafficking.
