The number of attacks on centers for asylum seekers in Germany rose over the past year to 121, an increase of 73% over 2021.
The German Ministry of the Interior published statistics, in response to a request from Parliament, that no less than 1,248 refugees and asylum-seekers were also subjected to attacks outside asylum centers, which included targeting them with verbal and physical violence.
“Asylum seekers who are looking for protection and safety here live in a state of terror and fear,” said Clara Bonger, the immigration official in the Parliamentary Left bloc.
Bunger was quoted by German media as saying that the numbers are alarming, calling for stronger measures to be taken against far-right groups, adding: “This should put us on high alert, because the number of attacks has increased again after many years.”
The German authorities had documented 70 attacks on asylum centers in 2021, the lowest level since 2015, when the authorities recorded 1,047 attacks
