The European Union Asylum Agency expects that the number of asylum applications will increase in the European Union countries during the year 2023, especially in Germany.
The agency pointed out that most of the asylum seekers come from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey, in addition to Ukraine.
Agency President Nina Gregory said, “It is quite clear that the number of applications will continue to increase for the foreseeable future.”
She explained that instability and threats to global security are features of today’s world.
The German news agency quoted the European official as saying that the geopolitical developments during the years 2021 and 2022 “will result in direct impacts on the need for international protection, and will lead to an increase in displacement to the countries of the European Union.”
Gregory indicated that about 790,000 asylum applications were received in the European Union from the beginning of this year until last October, an increase of 54% compared to the same period in 2021, but these numbers are still lower than those in 2015 and 2016.
Gregory called for the need to achieve “progress” in reforming the asylum and immigration system planned in the European Union.
