The American “National Interest” magazine suggested that the Iranian strike that hit a US military base in northern Syria, killing a retired American man and wounding six soldiers, opened the doors to the question again about the purpose of the American presence in Syria.
The magazine indicated in a report that the declared goals according to US policy makers are to contain and chase Iran’s influence and protect Israel, pointing out that the two goals may be legitimate, but the methods that the United States is working to implement in themselves are considered a stumbling block and raise more problems.
The magazine said, considering that Washington’s assertion of installing its forces in Syria, motivated by containing the threat of ISIS, is a “fabricated argument”, noting that the organization poses a direct threat to countries and regional actors much greater than the threat it poses to the United States.
The magazine added that Washington made many mistakes in Syria during the years 2014 and 2015, which led to the deterioration of its relationship with a valuable ally, Turkey, and also led to its unjustified presence in Syria.
She also pointed out that the administration of former President Barack Obama did not succeed in developing a clear plan to eliminate the “ISIS” organization and overthrow the authority of Bashar al-Assad, at the height of the organization’s activity in Syria.
