The Jordanian military announced yesterday that it blocked an attempt to smuggle a shipment of drugs from areas controlled by the Syrian regime on Wednesday.
A military source from the Jordanian Armed Forces General Command said that Border Guard forces, in coordination with the military security services and the Anti-Narcotics Unit, detected an attempt by a group of smugglers to cross the border through forward observations. From Syrian territory to Jordanian territory illegally.
The source stated that rapid response patrols were deployed and rules of engagement and direct fire applied to them, which led to the arrest of one of the smugglers and the withdrawal of the others deep into Syria.
The source added that after intensified searches and investigations in the area, a large amount of ammunition as well as drugs and a Kalashnikov weapon were found and the seized items were handed over to the authorities.
The source also stressed that the Jordanian Armed Forces “continue to fight with all its might and determination against any threat on the border fronts and any attempt to undermine and destabilize the security of the homeland and terrorize its citizens.”
