The British “Financial Times” newspaper wrote that there are Arab countries that oppose rapprochement with Damascus, especially that “Bashar Assad did nothing to rehabilitate himself”.
The newspaper reported that a source stated that Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan were among the countries that opposed the rapprochement with Damascus.
The newspaper said, “The countries that refused to compromise, in return, asked for the reward that Assad would give him.”
Officials in Arab countries have confirmed that one of the points of contention regarding normalization with Damascus is the production and trade of drugs in Syria. Arab countries cannot afford to pay for this.
Another official said that reestablishing relations with Damascus would reward Tehran at a time when Iranian forces and militias are deployed in Syria and exert influence over Assad.
The newspaper pointed out that the dissolution of the Arabs’ relations with Damascus may anger the US, which imposes sanctions on Syria.
