Syrian citizens trapped at the “Al-Safat” military airport near the capital Khartoum called for their evacuation from Sudan.
Refugees chose to go to the airport in hopes of being evacuated like other nationals, as going to the Egyptian border or the port of Port Sudan was grueling and financially costly. When refugees no longer have cash due to rising costs.
About 32 Syrians have been at Al-Safat military airport since last Monday, but evacuations face many hurdles as Egyptian, European and Canadian airlines require visas to transport Syrians.
According to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, one of the European planes refused to evacuate families even though the plane was empty after learning that the refugees had Syrian citizenship.
According to the website, there are about 700 Syrians stranded in and around Khartoum, while media websites revealed that Syrian families were looted and robbed during their exit from Sudan.
