US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry the results of the Amman Consultative Meeting on Syria.
The US State Department said the following: Blinken emphasized that “those who put pressure on the Assad regime should weigh well how these efforts meet the needs of the Syrian people.”
In response, Jeffrey DiLaurentis, the US deputy representative to the United Nations, urged countries to avoid normalizing with Damascus.
DiLaurentis said that Washington will not accept normalization of relations with Assad, will not lift sanctions against Damascus, and will not support the rebuilding process of Syria without progress in the political process.
During a UN Security Council session on Syria, the US official warned Assad not to flood the region with drugs and allow Russia to use Syria as a logistical point to export its destabilizing activities.
