Representative Faisal Jamoul, member of the Syrian Parliament’s Constitutional and Legislative Committee, has introduced a draft law to raise the age at which a medical doctor can be terminated from public service.
Jamoul said that the draft bill currently under discussion in parliament also includes increasing the retirement age of doctors to 65, and that he has the right to request an optional extension until the age of seventy.
According to the pro-government newspaper Al-Watan, Jamool added that the project aims to preserve cadres and expertise “especially after the shortage of medical personnel after the war in Syria and the migration of large numbers of doctors abroad.”
Ghassan Fendi, President of the Doctors’ Union, explained that the draft law aims to “reduce the loss of only human doctors and keep them in the Ministry of Health”.
Fendi believes the project is a positive step, especially since after the age of sixty the doctor becomes more mature in his mental giving ability as he gains great experience in his specialty in addition to his role as a doctor. It can play in the training of new doctors.”
