The grassroots movement formerly known as “Abandon Biden” has officially rebranded itself as “Abandon Harris,” shifting its focus to opposing the Harris-Walz ticket in the 2024 presidential election. This name change marks a strategic intensification of the campaign, which aims to rally Muslim-Americans and their allies in key swing states against the Democratic Party’s continued support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
The movement originally gained traction during the Democratic primary season, where it urged voters to cast uncommitted ballots as a form of protest against President Joe Biden’s support for Israel. Following Biden’s decision to drop out of the race and the elevation of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee, the group redirected its efforts, now aiming to prevent Harris from securing the presidency.
In a statement released on August 27, 2024, the “Abandon Harris” campaign condemned Harris’s stance on the Gaza genocide, accusing the Biden-Harris administration of enabling the indiscriminate killing of Palestinians through continued military aid to Israel. The campaign emphasized that mere rhetoric or calls for a ceasefire are insufficient without meaningful action to end U.S. complicity in the conflict.
“Abandon Harris” urges voters not to abstain from the 2024 election but to support third-party candidates as a clear rejection of both major parties, which they accuse of supporting and perpetuating violence in Gaza. Although the campaign has not yet endorsed a specific third-party candidate, it remains firm in its mission to defeat the Democratic ticket, emphasizing that they will “not cede a single inch” in their fight against policies they view as morally reprehensible.
As the 2024 election approaches, “Abandon Harris” continues to position itself as a significant force in swing states, where it seeks to influence the outcome by mobilizing a disillusioned electorate committed to opposing what they see as the Democratic Party’s complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
