Al-Monitor has seen in a report that the United States is beginning to soften its rhetoric of rejecting Arab contact with the Bashar al-Assad regime.
According to the report, the administration of President Joe Biden has always expressed that it is against normalization with Assad, since no serious progress has been made in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254. But Deputy Secretary of State Barbara Leaf delivered a different message.
In the report, it was stated that Leif called on the countries of the region twice last month to achieve something in exchange for openness to the long-boycotted regime.
An Arab diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on the site that “from what we understand from what the Americans have said, they are not against the initiatives … but US sanctions will continue.”
What we see is that the Arabs should try to get to know Assad, let’s see what the result will be,” he said.
