US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken confirmed, during a phone call with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, that UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254 is the only solution to end the war in Syria.
Blinken said that Washington “will not normalize its relations with the Assad regime,” and “does not support other countries normalizing their relations with the regime before achieving real political progress facilitated by the United Nations and consistent with Resolution 2254.”
Blinken stressed the importance of coordination with the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen.
Blinken noted the need for Damascus to work to create conditions that motivate refugees to return voluntarily, safely and with dignity, including significantly improving respect for human rights.
For its part, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that Safadi put Blinken in “a picture of the track launched by the Amman meeting with a leading Arab role to gradually move towards resolving the Syrian crisis according to a step-by-step methodology,” and the importance of this track in “breaking the stalemate.”
Al-Safadi pointed out the importance of the “central” American role in efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and the continued coordination with the United States in efforts to end it.
