The European Parliament approved a number of proposals with a nearly two-thirds majority, including asking member states to host large numbers of refugees and migrants.
The proposals are part of a controversial reform framework ahead of European elections in 2024.
The proposals include a contingency plan that will compel EU countries to assist one of them in the event of the sudden arrival of migrants and refugees hoping to enter beyond the country’s reception capacity.
The European Parliament took a stand on the upcoming immigration and asylum rules reform, before negotiating its final form with the 27 long-divided EU member states on so-called forced transfers.
