Dan Stoinescu, head of the European Union’s mission to Syria, welcomed any Arab initiative that paves the way for ongoing negotiations on Syria and produces tangible results under certain conditions.
The European envoy reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to reaching a political solution in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254.
He stressed that European policies towards Syria depend on three “Nos” (no normalization, no lifting of sanctions and no restructuring, except that Damascus has begun to take irreversible steps on political transition) Security Council Resolution No. 2254).
He stated that he believed that no one could just turn the page of the last 12 years in Syria in the EU countries.
He also made it clear that limiting the issue to normalization without any political process amounts to a lack of accountability at a time when the European Union is still at the forefront of accountability efforts for all of Syria.
He pointed out that the European Union funds the work of the investigative committee and its international, impartial and independent mechanism and reiterated its call to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court.
