United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that although the international community is far from conditions that will ensure a peaceful solution for all parties, it does not lose hope in finding a solution to the Syrian crisis.
According to the Ruadu network, Guterres called for a deal with the Syrians, saying that if the Syrians do not come together they risk becoming a playground for the activities of others.
“Syria is divided today and there are different armies from different countries. We have many different interests in Syria.”
Emphasizing that the Syrian people deserve peace and should not let others determine their fate, he pointed out that the Syrian people should overcome their differences.
He explained that the Syrian people, during his duty as the High Commissioner for Iraqi Refugees in Syria, rejected the resettlement of Iraqis in camps and accepted their presence in the society.
Guterres reiterated that the UN agency accepted the delay in delivering aid to those affected by the earthquake in northwest Syria, and that aid from Saudi, Egypt and Qatar was able to reach the region on time.
Expressing his regret that the rescue teams did not enter northwest Syria when the earthquake occurred, as in Turkey, he emphasized that he understood the great disappointment of the people in Syria from the United Nations.
