Iranian militias have recently strengthened several of their own checkpoints and set up other checkpoints in Suwayda province to protect arms and drug shipments.
According to local sources, Iran reinforced the checkpoints with members of the Syrian regime’s National Defense, members of the Military Security in Sweida, which is also affiliated with Iran, and members of the police.
This coincided with the appointment of Brigadier General Tamim Danda, the new commander of the As-Suwayda Police from Tartus Governorate.
Previously, Assad forces sent military convoys, including tanks, to As-Suwayda, the last of which was last month, apart from the four-wheel drive vehicles that enter the military units throughout the province on a daily basis.
The duty of these checkpoints is not to chase after those who ship or promote drug shipments to Jordan in Suwayda, or to follow the gangs affiliated with the security forces in Suwayda that are considered the protectors of the Iranian project.
The barriers will be a line of protection for the arms shipments that Iran successively transfers to Es-Suwayda to strengthen military posts in various regions within the framework of Iran’s imposition of control over the areas where the Druze community resides.
Activists from As-Suwayda fear that checkpoints will begin to arrest those who oppose the regime and the Iranian presence, and force their influence over the governorate.
