The head of the “Syrian Democratic Council” (MSD), Elham Ahmed, confirmed that the Arab countries’ contact with the Assad regime after the catastrophe of the earthquake, and the restoration of relations with it, will not produce a political solution in Syria, but rather will only lead to floating it.
Commenting on Bashar al-Assad’s visit to the Sultanate of Oman, Ahmed said in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper: “I do not think that these visits will lead to a political solution on the Syrian level; Because unconditional dealing usually leads to floating the system and not to political solutions.
Ahmed stressed that the regime did not change its policies by an inch. And that these visits will not serve the Syrian people, pointing to the need to monitor international and Arab humanitarian aid internationally and distribute it fairly to all citizens affected by this earthquake, wherever they are.
Regarding the meetings held by the MSD with Arab parties, and whether there has been a change in the position of the Arab governments on the regime, Ahmed said: “During these meetings, these parties did not talk about a change in the positions of the Arab governments to refloat the regime or accept it in its current form.”
And she added: “In turn, we demanded the necessity of presenting an Arab project to solve the Syrian crisis, and we also called on Turkey to withdraw its forces from the northwest of the country and put an end to the blatant Iranian military interference, and we also called on the League of Arab States to draw up a road map for a political solution and to play its role to put an end to the ongoing wars, and end the suffering of the people and resolve The outstanding differences between the people of this militarily divided country.
Regarding the United States easing the sanctions imposed on the Syrian regime due to the earthquake, Ahmed indicated that MSD made contacts with the American ambassadors present in the northeastern regions of Syria, and they confirmed in turn that these exemptions fall within the humanitarian context and do not contradict the “Caesar Law.”
Regarding Russia’s sponsorship of the negotiations between the regime and the SDF, Ahmed explained that these efforts did not bear fruit. Because Moscow was not neutral in mediation, and wanted a solution within the framework of strengthening the regime’s grip on all Syrian territory.
And whether the regime’s policy changed after those Russian efforts, Ahmed said: “The regime’s positions have not changed; Neither on the humanitarian level, nor on the political level, as he did not show any flexibility in dealing with the rest of the Syrians who disagreed with him, and did not accept channels of communication to deal with the devastating earthquake and the human tragedy.”
Ahmed believed that “all Syrians, regime and opposition, are required to deal with this catastrophe within the humanitarian framework only and leave political differences aside.” She added: “Any Syrian whose heart is against his country, state and people, can turn the page on political differences and advance towards a comprehensive solution, exploiting the system.” This humanitarian catastrophe, imposing himself, strengthening his authority and strengthening his position at the expense of the pain and wounds of the Syrians, is a tragedy in itself.”
