Arab foreign ministers agreed to return the Syrian regime to the Arab League today, Sunday, after more than 12 years of expelling it.
The ministers decided, during a closed meeting at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in Cairo, to resume the participation of delegations of the Syrian regime in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States, and all its affiliated organizations and agencies, as of May 7, 2023.
The resolution stressed the need to take practical and effective steps to gradually resolve the Syrian crisis, according to the principle of step by step and in line with Security Council Resolution No. 2254.
The ministers also decided to form a ministerial liaison committee consisting of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, to follow up on the implementation of the Amman Declaration and to continue direct dialogue with the regime to reach a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis according to the step-by-step methodology.
The ministers agreed to renew commitment to preserving Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, stability and territorial integrity, based on the Arab League Charter and its principles.
The Arab foreign ministers welcomed the Arab statements issued by the Jeddah meeting on Syria on April 14 and the Amman meeting on Syria on May 1, and the keenness to launch an Arab leadership role in efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis that addresses all the consequences of the humanitarian, security and political crisis on Syria. and its people.
The statement also welcomed the Syrian regime’s willingness to cooperate with Arab countries to implement the outputs of the relevant Arab statements, and the need to implement the commitments and consensus reached at the Amman meeting, as well as the adoption of the necessary mechanisms to activate the Arab role.
The ministers requested the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States to follow up the implementation of what was stated in this decision, and to inform the Council of developments.
