Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry had a phone call with the UN ambassador to Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Sunday, where they discussed the “solution” of the Syrian crisis.
Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Shoukry had a phone call with Pedersen “in which he aimed to consult and coordinate with the UN envoy on the resolution of the Syrian crisis and ways to advance a political solution”.
During the meeting, Shoukry reaffirmed “Egypt’s full support for the UN envoy’s efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement on Syrian ownership in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254”.
Egypt’s foreign minister also stated that “Egypt places a high priority on restoring security and stability in Syria”.
According to the State Department statement, the two sides “agreed to continue consultation and coordination in the coming period”, without providing further details.
Resolution 2254, voted on by the Security Council on 18 December 2015, provides for the initiation of peace talks in Syria, the establishment of a transitional government, the holding of elections under the auspices of the UN, and the cessation of all attacks on civilians.
