Syrian regime Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad paid a visit to the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Saturday morning for the first time since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in March 2011.
In a tweet on “Twitter”, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received Al Miqdad at the ministry’s headquarters in the capital, Cairo, and that they had a “closed bilateral meeting” without providing further details.
According to the Egyptian newspaper “Seventh Day”, Shukri met with Al-Mikdad at the headquarters of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry “to hold a joint discussion session on files of common interests between the two countries”.
The newspaper reported that Al-Miqdad arrived at Cairo International Airport early on Saturday from Damascus to hold talks on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and was “welcome in the VIP lounge at the airport.”
The Syrian regime’s news agency SANA, on the other hand, claimed that Al Mikdad “came to Cairo at the invitation of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to hold talks on strengthening bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries and to discuss the latest developments.” in the region and around the world.”
It is worth noting that this visit was the first of its kind since the Syrian regime suspended its membership in November 2011 due to the Arab League suppressing public protests.
