Faisal al-Mikdad, the Syrian regime’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday for a first-of-its-kind visit to the Kingdom since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011.
Saudi News Agency stated that Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Al-Khuraiji received Al Miqdad at King Abdulaziz Airport and noted that the visit came upon the invitation of Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Ferhan.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the purpose of the visit is to hold a discussion session on “efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves Syria’s unity, security and stability, and facilitates the return of Syrian refugees to their countries.” It provides humanitarian aid to the affected areas in the homeland and Syria.”
According to Syrian regime media outlets, Deputy Foreign Minister Ayman Soussan, Head of Administrative Support Department Jamal Najib and Yazan al-Hakim from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took part in the delegation accompanying Al Mikdad.
Earlier this month, Reuters quoted three well-informed sources as saying that Saudi Arabia plans to invite Bashar al-Assad, the head of the Syrian regime, to the 32nd session of the League of Arab States.
