The UNHCR has notified several families of Syrian refugees in Lebanon of stopping their monthly financial support via text messages.
UNHCR spokeswoman, Nadine Mazloum, said that the pressures on the UN organization’s budget forced the UNHCR to take difficult decisions in light of its inability to support all those in need.
She added that the UNHCR program in Lebanon is only 50% funded, noting that the UNHCR budget for the years 2022 and 2023 exceeded $500 million.
The UN official said: “Despite the generous donations that donors make to us, we expect the funding to be insufficient to meet the growing needs during the coming year,” according to the “iNews” website.
She pointed out that the UNHCR has begun to give priority to families “which it considers to be the most affected and vulnerable in economic terms,” with the continuation of other aid programs.
