The independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria accused the Assad regime and the United Nations of being responsible for the delay in delivering life-saving aid to Syrians following the earthquake.
In a statement, the committee said the failures were “shocking”, including the failure to reach an agreement on an immediate cessation of fighting and allowing aid to flow by any possible means. them in their darkest times”.
Commission President Paulo Pinheiro said: “While there has been much heroism amid the suffering, we have also witnessed the wholesale failure of the government and the international community, including the United Nations, to quickly channel the necessary assistance to the Syrians. This is sorely needed.”
“Syrians now need a fully respected comprehensive ceasefire to keep civilians, including humanitarian workers, safe. It is incomprehensible that we are now investigating new attacks, even in the same areas devastated by earthquakes, because of this cruelty and indifference to the parties to the conflict.”
