The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Lebanon announced that it supports the return of Syrian refugees to their country, provided that their security is guaranteed.
“The UNHCR has never hindered the return of refugees to their country, but rather supports it on the condition that their security is guaranteed,” said UNHCR spokeswoman in Lebanon, Lisa Abu Khaled.
Abu Khaled added that the UNHCR does not call for the naturalization of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, noting that what it wants is “peaceful coexistence and respect for the rights of all, so that return becomes possible,” according to the Lebanese “Al Nashra” website.
“The UNHCR is working tirelessly to find sustainable solutions for refugees outside Lebanon, specifically through resettlement to third countries, and voluntary return to Syria in a safe and dignified manner,” she added.
Regarding the files of Syrian refugees and its participation with the Lebanese government, Abu Khaled confirmed that “the UNHCR was and still is ready to participate in concrete discussions” about that.
