Turkey announced that Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will visit Ankara again this week to make progress on reinstating ambassadors who cut ties ten years ago.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said, “We hope that his counterpart will arrive soon … hopefully this week”, and details will be announced next Wednesday.
It’s time to take concrete steps. We can take steps to appoint ambassadors during Şükrü’s visit.”
Çavuşoğlu visited Cairo last month after breaking diplomatic relations for a decade following the ousting of then-Egyptian president and Ankara’s ally Mohammed Morsi.
Shoukry also visited Turkey two weeks ago to express his solidarity after the massive earthquakes in Turkey and Syria that killed more than 50,000 people.
Shoukry said last month that talks with Turkey on the possibility of returning ambassadors would be held at an appropriate time.
Consultations between senior State Department officials began in Ankara and Cairo in 2021, as Turkey sought to improve relations with Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
However, normalization between Ankara and Cairo gained momentum after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, shook hands in Doha at the Doha World Cup.
