The so-called ‘Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria’ announced the establishment of a military base in Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) in the eastern countryside of Aleppo by Russian forces alongside Assad’s forces.
Colonel Oleg Ignatyuk, Deputy Director of the ‘Russian Reconciliation Center,’ stated that the armed forces of Russia and the Assad regime have completed setting up the ‘Kobani’ base near the Syrian-Turkish border in Aleppo province.
In a press statement, he mentioned that ongoing procedures aim ‘to monitor the regime ceasefire between the warring parties.’
Ayn al-Arab, located on the border strip with Turkey, is under the control of the ‘SDF,’ with a limited presence of Assad’s forces. Over the years, Turkey has sought to control the area to push the PKK away from its borders.
The city is considered a stronghold for many ‘SDF’ and PKK leaders and their birthplace. MMany young people from there have gone to the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq to join the ‘Kurdistan Workers’ Party,’ and the city holds significant symbolism for the ‘SDF.’
Notably, Russian and Turkish forces have conducted many joint patrols in the countryside of Ayn al-Arab in recent years, according to the Sochi Agreement reached in 2019.
